The 2014  Hurricane Season is upon us! It began on June 1st and will run through the 30th of November.

If you do not already have one,  it is a good idea to prepare an emergency kit now.

Some items to consider for your emergency kit are:

  • Water and  enough non-perishable food to sustain your family for at least 3 days
  • A battery operated radio and extra new batteries so you can get important information from local officials, especially if there is a call for voluntary or mandatory evacuations. In the event that you are required to evacuate you will want to know where the closest local shelters are.
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Maps
  • Cash or traveler’s check and change
  • Important documents such as proof of residence, pictures of your family including pets, insurance policies, bank account records, identification records and tax records in a waterproof, portable container.
  • Comfortable clothing for each family member with at least a couple of changes of clothes.
  • Blankets / sleeping bags and pillows for each family member
  • Unique family needs such as prescription medications, extra glasses,  pet supplies including pet carriers and pet food and medication, infant supplies including diapers, formula, special food, favorite blankets or toys or any other unique need your family may have.
